A Billion Dollar Tax GRAB!

Dear John,

In the next few weeks, City Council and the Cook County Commissioners will approve a BILLION, (yes, with a B) dollar increase in property taxes, land transfer taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes and array of other fees and taxes, with no sign of relief of the transit crisis. This will affect EVERYONE living in Lake View and we are calling on each of you to take action before it is too late.

The implication of an increase in these taxes will mean that those who may consider buying a house in the city will now consider the suburbs. Those who take public transit will be forced to drive on our ever increasing crowded roads.  Property tax increase will force people out of their homes. A 22% increase in Sales Tax will force small shop owners out of business, as people will make their purchases in "Big Boxes" in the suburbs. AND their rents will increase because of the increase in property taxes! As more people and businesses move out of the city and county, there will be fewer taxes collected, more housing on the market, empty shops along our streets, etc!

We are being asked to tighten our belts, yet the city and county are fattening their coffers, giving aldermen and commissioners more money to spend and increasing the payroll at the same time!  We are told that we will get 50 new police ..for the whole city!! Where is the accountability? Alderman Tunney is not holding any budget meeting with his constituents to get feedback and Alderman Waugespack doesn't return phone calls! Isn't this taxation WITHOUT representation??? Therefore, we need to let them know that the city budget is not acceptable! Call their offices and let them know how you feel before it's too late.

Call President Stroger's office directly; tell him that his $900 million tax grab will hurt all of us.

Act now before it's too late.

Alderman Waugespack 773-248-1330
