Subject: Happy Thanksgiving!
Lake View Citizens' Council
Dear John,

We are very fortunate to live in a great nation, a great state, a great city and most importantly, a great neighborhood. Lake View is a vibrant and exciting place to live, dine, work and play. We continue to work on growing our green space, controlling zoning, and involving residents and businesses in bettering our community.  We are one of the leading entertainment districts in Chicago and are fortunate to have individually owned shops and boutiques (compared to the big box nature of the suburbs).

LVCC Cares

To give back to this great neighborhood, LVCC will be again holding our annual "Operation Mitten" to provide gloves and outer wear to underprivileged kids in the neighborhood.  We are also collecting non-perishable goods to give to Lake View Food Pantry.   For more information on how you can donate this holiday season, contact the LVCC office.

Budget Woes

One thing we are not as thankful for is the budget woes at the City and State level and the lack of Federal funding.  We are concerned by the lack of a long-term solution for the CTA. And with the recent passage of the City of Chicago 2008 budget, we fear there are few benefits for Lake View.

City of Chicago 2008 Budget Vote

The aldermen supported raising property taxes ($83.4 Million) and fees negatively impacting our community. The increase in property taxes will escalate during the next 3 years. The $80 increase per $250,000 value home will surmount to hundreds of dollars per year after the 7% law expires. As a reminder, 2006 property tax bills are due December 3, 2007 and there are several property tax appeal workshops you can attend before the due date.

What does Lake View get for the increases in taxes and fees? Per our latest survey, perception of crime in Lake View is up but we are not getting extra police. Similarly, our public grade schools are not receiving extra money. And many of our neighborhood branches are in need of more dollars to improve their green spaces and support their local programming.

As each alderman does receive an increase for their respective offices, we implore you to demand they direct those dollars to the causes you hold most important . So, when we open our phone bill, or buy a bottle of water, or lease a car, or use natural gas to heat our house this winter or use water to cook, we should thank our aldermen for the increase in taxes and fees and ask them what specifically we are getting in return.

Support our small businesses so they don't leave the city and leave us empty shops along our streets.  Lake View East Chamber of Commerce (LVECC) is planning a "Tax is On Us" holiday shopping event by working with their merchants to have a 9.75% discount offered to all shoppers on Sunday, December 2 from 11AM to 3PM.   Northalsted Area Merchants is also have a holiday shopping event on December 1-2, 2007.

We wish you a wonderful and thoughtful Thanksgiving,
