Snow and Ice Ordinance

During these cold winter months please remember to shovel your sidewalk, not only is it the neighborly thing to do, but it is also the law.

We are all pedestrians at some point in the day, whether walking to the bus, to a car, or to a neighborhood store. Without a wide, clear path, snow and ice on the sidewalk make it difficult for everyone - especially people with disabilities, seniors, and children - to walk safely.

Be a good neighbor and offer help to those in your community who are physically unable to clear their own sidewalks.

For more information regarding this city ordinance please visit the website below.

Dominicks - 3030 N. Broadway

In September, Alderman Tunney joined Dominick's executives, the development team and local community leaders to break ground for the new 40,000 square foot Dominick's, parking and residential development at 3030 N. Broadway.

Construction should be in full swing by the end of the winter and the development is expected to be open for business in 18 months.  Updates on the project can be found at www.broadway3030.com/construction.asp.

Cold Weather Tips

Families having trouble paying their energy bills may turn to The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for help.

LIHEAP will provide low-income households a one-time benefit that can be used towards your energy bill.  The amount of your benefit is determined by income, household size, fuel type and geographic location.

To find out how LIHEAP can help you and your family please call 800-571-2332 or visit The Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County, located at 208 S. LaSalle St., Suite 1900, Chicago.

By law, if you are unable to pay your heating bill, all homes will be provided heat; with a minimum temperature of 68 degrees, from September 15th of each year to June 1st of the following year.

Parking Meters and Rates

All parking meters in the City of Chicago are now in effect 365 days a year.  There will be NO meter holidays.

With parking rates increasing you will also see the technology improving, expect to see more pay & display meters for your convenience.

Park meters vary throughout the City so please make note of hours and rates when and where you park.

In the 44th Ward, we anticipates that meter rates will rise to one dollar per hour over the next couple of years, and does not propose creating any new metered spaces.  Our office will be working closely with Community Organizations and Chambers on any future changes

2008 Property Tax Exemption Forms Now Available

Cook County Assessor Jim Houlihan announced that Senior Freeze Exemption applications have been mailed to the 135,000 taxpayers who received the exemption last year.

The Senior Freeze Exemption is available to all Cook County homeowners who were born prior to, or in, the year 1943 and have total household incomes of $55,000 a year or less. Requirements also state that eligible seniors must have used their home as their primary residence and lived there  since January 1st of 2007.

Taxpayers who received the Senior Citizen Exemption last year will have the exemption automatically applied to the second-installment tax bills received this fall, and they do not need to take any further action.  Last year, over 260,000 homeowners qualified to receive the Senior Citizen Exemption.

Forms for the Senior Exemption, Senior Freeze Exemption, Disabled Person's Exemption, Disabled Veteran Exemption and Returning Veteran Exemption are available on line at www.cookcountyassessor.com or you may call (312) 443-7550.
