East Lake View Neighbors (ELVN)

James Murphy, ELVN President
Amy Karatz, ELVN Vice President
Terie Kata, ELVN Treasurer

The past year has been busy and productive for East Lake View Neighbors (ELVN). Continued use of our email notification system and our website has enabled us to provide information to our members on all meetings and events scheduled by the city and state officials who provide the dates to us.

ELVN has provided public officials with the neighborhood's views on issues confronting our community. Such issues include the Center on Halsted, a campus park at LeMoyne School, Cubs expansion, new construction at the former Marigold Lanes and Supermercado. ELVN conducted its first email survey of our members on traffic operations during Cubs games and provided the results to city officials and the Chicago Cubs; a survey was also conducted by email on the proposed traffic light at Clark and Waveland.

2006 was a year of change for East Lake View Neighbors as long time board members, President and Vice President, Bonnie Leracz and Ernie Hefner both moved out of our neighborhood in the spring.  Although their absence is felt, board member James Murphy reluctantly volunteered to fill Bonnie’s shoes as president.  With the help and dedication of Terie Kata the 8th annual ELVN Oktoberfest raised near $15,000 to support neighborhood institutions, charities and projects within our boundaries.  These include the House of Good Shepherd, Inter-American & Greeley schools, Gill Park Youth Programs, the Lake View Pantry and the new “Elevated Park” located on Irving Park Rd.  ELVN looks forward to working to support the development of this new park space, acquired by an anonymous donor.

The 2005 Oktoberfest raised $20,000 for LeMoyne and Greeley Schools, Gill Park, the Lake View Pantry, and the House of the Good Shepherd. ELVN also paid for the purchase of reflective vests for parents at Greeley School who volunteer as traffic aides.

In a first-time ELVN event, eight neighborhood gardens were presented with awards of $50 each for adding color and beauty to the community. Alderman Tunney contributed half of the prize money and served as a judge of the gardens.
